Dante & The Magic Lomi Stick

As an avid reader and a teacher, I’m always on the lookout for books that entertain and engage young minds. Dante & the Magic Lomi Stick by Damascinus is one of those rare finds—a book that blends adventure, mythology, and heartfelt emotion into an unforgettable story.

Dante & the Magic Lomi Stick is a coming-of-age tale wrapped in Hawaiian mythology and sprinkled with just the right amount of humor, action, and magic. We follow Dante Wilson, a twelve-year-old boy grappling with the devastating loss of his father. When his mother decides to take him back to their family’s home in Hawai’i for healing and a fresh start, Dante stumbles upon something far bigger than himself.  He finds himself mixed up in a centuries-old prophecy, a battle between gods and spirits, and a magic-infused lomi stick that might change his destiny. Along the way, he befriends a talking turtle, faces off against a terrifying Mo’o (Hawaiian dragon spirit), and discovers his inner strength.

Damascinus seamlessly blends Hawaiian culture and mythology with a modern adventure story. Incorporating Hawaiian words and legends feels natural and immersive, and young readers will learn about the islands’ folklore without even realizing it. The world-building is rich but never overwhelming—Damascinus gives us just enough to spark curiosity, making this a perfect gateway book for kids who love mythology-based adventures (think Percy Jackson with a Hawaiian twist!).

I absolutely love Dante, the protagonist.  He’s relatable, funny, and full of heart. His journey isn’t just about magic and monsters; it’s also about grief, resilience, and figuring out who he is in a world that suddenly feels unfamiliar. His emotions are raw and real; kids who have experienced loss (or even just significant life changes) will find themselves deeply connected to his story. Dante’s relationship with his grandparents is made me long for my own grandparents. The action scenes are fast-paced, nail-biting moments. And let’s not forget about Theo, the turtle—he steals every scene he’s in; part mentor, part sidekick, and entirely lovable.

Dante & the Magic Lomi Stick is a must-read for middle-grade and young YA readers. It’s funny, exciting, and deeply meaningful, with just the right mix of fantasy, culture, and heart. Whether you’re a kid, a teacher, or someone who loves a great adventure, this book deserves a spot on your shelf. I can’t wait for the sequel!
